Thinking Chaos, Thinking Fences All speech, written or spoken, is a dead language, until it finds a willing and prepared hearer. -- Robert Louis Stevenson

Apparently the (disturbingly named) USA Patriot Act enables federal officials to obtain lending records or Internet usage records from libraries. However, libraries are not permitted to directly advise their patrons about this. One such librarian has, however, found a way around it.

The ongoing war over peer-to-peer file sharing (i.e. Napster et al) is a favourite subject of mine. I recently read this analysis of record company financial data that was pretty revealing. For example, there were almost 12,000 (down to 27,000 from 38,000) fewer new releases for the consumer to choose from in 2001 than 1999, but sales only dropped by 4.1 percent. Another one: The price of the average CD has increased by 8%, up to US $14.23.

I was born seven years after Expo '67 in Montreal, but I sure heard lots about it. I feel a certain kinship with it, as Expo '86 was a formative bit of my childhood. The good folks at the federal archives have created a great online exhibit of Expo '67. The USSR pavilion looks particularly groovy:

By the way, I found these cool photos of Expo 86. And while we're getting nostalgic, remember these classic benches?

About 15 years ago, sitting in a tent in the front yard of my house in West Vancouver, I bet my friend Brent Bradshaw that there wouldn't be a Terminator sequel in the next ten years. What was I on? Was I too young to recognize the den of iniquity that is the modern film industry? The first one was made in 1984, and I thought I was in the clear until, in Biology 12, Brent demanded his $20 for Arnold's reprisal of the role. Bastard. Now, 13 years after Terminator 2, we've got Terminator 3, Rise of the Machines. Fortunately, I was wise enough not to bet on a second sequel. Mind you, if we'd retained the ten year restriction, I would've won. I doubt that it will be a very good film, but I wanted to impart the anecdote.
