The New York Daily News offers this fascinating case study of the economics of the music business. In short, it demonstrates how a four-piece band only earns US $40,000 each off of a debut album that sells 500,000 copies (for a gross revenue of US $8.5 million). I suppose you can't put a price on fame and groupies.
