Thinking Chaos, Thinking Fences All speech, written or spoken, is a dead language, until it finds a willing and prepared hearer. -- Robert Louis Stevenson

This made me laugh. I was recently going through my boxes of old stuff. Everybody seems to have varying amounts of these--childhood memorabilia and sundry moldering detritis. I've got 6 or so, which seems a reasonable amount for my age and stage. Amongst my Literature 12 notebooks and 'Til Tuesday tapes, I found this disk:

What's funny is that the text that reads 'BAD SECTORS' is my mother's writing--she was a very early adopter of the personal PC. The other writing, complete with eager exclamation mark, is my brother's. Don't those three lines tell a story? Why'd my Mom keep the disk if it wasn't to be used? Why'd my brother adopt it? What's on it? I'll probably never know at this stage, but at least I've got a picture of what it looked like.

Hilarious Web translator that 'take what you write in it and turn it into the manner a 12-year-old AOLer would write it.' Here's a paragraph from my previous entry in middle-American teen-speak:

I don't talk about sports very much in this blog, but as a long suffering Canucks fan, this is noteworthy. Not only did they come back from a three game deficit, but in the next round they play the well-coached but under-powered Minnesota Wild (a softer touch than the Avalanche, who the Wild upset). The people are still honking cars and yelling out in the street. And that's after only one playoff round. Vancouver's hockey-mad, and the mania will increase with each victory.
Mind you, as I've observed to a few people recently, spending two years in Ireland kind of softened my dedication to the Canucks. When you spend all that time watching sports that you're totally ambivalent about ('My, my, another leg-before-wicket!'), it lays bare just how unimportant sports are generally.
