I’m Coming Out

I have a secret affection for The Gilmore Girls. There, I said it. It’s like an enormous weight has been lifted off me. I’m liberated.

But really, it’s a really funny show. The dialogue has some of the wit of Buffy at a West Wing pace. The acting is decent and the situations are pretty undramatic. The smalltown mundanity of it kind of appeals to me. I compare this with Six Feet Under, a show I really wanted to like but just couldn’t. Everyone on that show was utterly wacked, and every week there seemed to be some ridiculously melodramatic battle between them. I appreciate how well-adjusted the characters on The Gilmore Girls are.

To those doubters out there, I must cite a reference that truly impressed me in tonight’s episode (and I’m rarely impressed by television). In the middle of a scene, one character said to the other, “have we been here before?” and the other replied “I recognize that tree.” This is a direct quote from Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, not the sort of thing you usually hear on the WB.

Of course it helps that both of the female leads are hot brunettes.

I, too, am a big fan of GG and I’m not ashamed to admit it. I can hide behind the fact that the two lead actresses are both hawtties (when in reality, I watch it because of the razor sharp dialogue and Northern Exposure-esque characters…oh, yeah, and the fact that the two lead actresses are hawtties).

It all started when I took an ill-advised tour of the Warner Brothers lot a few years ago — overpriced, boring as hell…the highlight was the famous town square where innumerable films and TV shows have been made. The guide explained that the reason the square was all decked in (atypical for SoCal) fall colours was that they were filming the pilot for a new series set back East called ‘Gilmore Girls’…at the time, I thought “Great, another show I’ve never heard of on this tour…where the hell was ‘Seinfeld’ filmed?” My later decision to watch the premiere of the show just to see what we’d seen on the tour proved to be one of the better decisions in my TV-viewing career.

While I watch very little TV in general, I adore this show. When I was babysitting my baby sister every Tuesday night, I made sure to watch it — making it rather awkward to play with my sister who wants to play during the show and stare mindlessly during commercials, whereas I’m the opposite…

Darren, you have nothing to be ashamed of. GG is a great show, and I watch it whenever it’s on.

Bear in mind, I also watch Alias and Smallville, so perhaps I’m a dork.

As for GG, I will have to finally give it a try after a few years of brushing off enthusiastic reviews by friends. High lit references in pop culture are one of my favourite things.

I had the same reaction to Six Feet Under. I was really looking forward to watching it and rented the first season. I watched three episodes and gave up. The only points of the show I actually appreciated were all in the opening credits. In the show, there wasn’t even one character I could care about, root for, or even love to hate. I would, however, watch a finale in which all of those detestable gobwads die with the morbid inventiveness that opens each episode :)

The Gilmore Girls rocks. I love the witty humour. I agree that both “girls” are pretty hot.

The only character on the show who annoys the heck out of me is Michel. On such a good show, you’d think that the producers would be able to find an actor who didn’t have such a crappy faux French accent!

I forgot to mention that there is a girl at work who is the spitting image of Lane Kim. My co-worker acts, talks, and looks like Lane!

GG is my favourite show ever – I especially love some of the banter between Lorelei and her mother. ;) The painfully neurotic Paris is brilliant as well.

Yep Darren, my wife loves this show also. It’s feelgood but with an edge :-) I’m glad you’re out of the closet so to speak.

You’ll be pleased to know that Jane Espensen, one of the best writers on staff at Buffy, has moved over to Gilmour Girls to become an Executive Producer.
