Is Something Happening in Flickrtown?

Over the past few days, I’ve received several Friendster-Orkut-LinkedIn-Tribesque invitations to become peoples’ contact in Flickr. I don’t mind, as I am indeed their friends or acquaintances in real life, but what’s behind this surge of activity? Did Flickr just roll out some new aspect of their technology? Have they been running a big PR campaign recently? What gives?

I feel kind of sheepish accepting peoples’ invitations to become Flickr contacts, because I don’t really use the service. It’s nifty and all, but I’ve yet to be convinced that the best place for my online photos isn’t on my own site. I uploaded a few photos and completed a profile, but haven’t really made much use of it.

  1. The best place for your photos is your website. That’s one of the best things about Flickr.. the ability to use their powerful organization tools and tag structure and then to suck photos into your website via RSS and their dead simple API. You can pull in just once from your blog conference and your trip to Ireland by keyword while excluding ones of things you don’t think your readers will be interested in. Get under the hood…it’s really simple and powerful.

And yeah, they seem to be growing fast. Hell, I got 5 of my friends to sign-up so I could get my account upgraded to Pro. 😛

  2. I’ve been a member for a while, but I finally got around to track down one of my favorite West-Coasters. Thanks for my testimony, it made my day. 🙂
