Free Stock Photography

On a couple of occasions, I’ve mentioned sites that offer cheap and free stock photographs. At Capulet, we’re regular customers of iStockPhoto. I’ve even got a photo on there for others to use–it’s been downloaded exactly once, netting me 10 cents (American, so that’s like CAN 0.12).

Via Waxy, here’s a very thorough survey of free stock photography sites.

Finding quality images and photos for complementing an important article, essay or news report is already quite a challenge for many. Imagine when the goal is not just too find good images, but find some that you could openly and freely use without needing to pay royalties or one-time publishing rights to someone.

The article author seems to favour the irritatingly named stock.xchng, which apparently lives in Hungary. They’ve got a photo randomizer, which is an engaging waster of exactly 38 seconds.

  1. I’m pretty fond of stock.xchng, even if I can never remember the name of it. I found lots of really great pictures there when I needed to make a site for work last christmas, and needed the trendy “boring object on white background” that has become so popular.

  2. This is the first I’ve heard stock.xchng, and I’m quite happy now! I’ve been looking for some stuff along these lines that I can use!

    Thanks!
