Production Photos from HG2G

I recently finished reading Wish You Were Here, the biography of Douglas Adams by Nick Webb. It’s a friendly sort of book, full of warm anecdotes about Adams’ tremendous capacity for procrastination and spending money. Famously, he onces said “I love deadlines - I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by.” We’re lessened by Adams’ early departure from these earthly bonds.

Having enjoyed his biography and revisited his books, I’m more excited that ever to see The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy movie. I’m optimistic that it’ll be a combination of Hollywood slickness and British wit and acting. This is all just a long preamble to say that Slashdot brings us these production photos from the movie.

Incidentally, if you haven’t read Douglas Adams and Mark Carwardine’s excellent non-fiction book Last Chance to See, you must. Adams described it as his best book, and I’d agree. It’s exceptionally clever, funny and poignant.

I’m as big a fan of Adams’ books as anyone, but can someone explain why people are so geared up to see a HGTTG movie? I thought the 80s TV series was just fine. Why this constant need to remake things that aren’t broken?

Well, Juan (may I call you Juan?), the obivous answer is to make lots and lots of money. However, TV and film are different mediums, and ‘Hitchhiker’s’ seems to me the sort of short but epic-in-scope novel that will benefit from the cinema. Besides, Douglas Adams himself always dreamed of making a film version, and was generally very disappointed with the sets and special effects in the TV series.
