Girl Holds Her Own Heart

Take5Cafe2This is unquestionably the most remarkable photo I’ve seen in the newspaper in weeks. It’s of a 15-year-old girl, Brittany Ward, holding her own heart. She had it replaced because hers was badly damaged by a viral infection. It’s not a particularly good photo (dig the girl’s sheepish expression), but it does succintly demonstrate the miracle of modern medicine. Apologies for the quality–I scanned it from the newspaper as I couldn’t find a copy online.

UPDATE: Because the Internet always scoops you, here’s a similar photo from 2003. This 12-year-old boy is really having some fun with his heart.

That’s a good reminder to do something about organ donorship.

Whoa, my brother’s heart was destroyed by a viral infection too. He didn’t get to hold his heart though…

WHAT?? That can happen?? where does this virus come from? is it in the air? how do you know you have it??

This makes me kind of mildly sick. I hope never to “get” to hold my own heart.
