Universe Collapses: Picasso On Sale at Costco

Via BoingBoing, we find this peculiar item on sale at Costco–an original Picasso:

This is an original crayon on paper drawing by Pablo Picasso. The front of the work is signed and dated (November 29, 1970) by Pablo Picasso. The authentication is a hand written and signed declaration by Picasso’s daughter, Maya on a photograph of the actual drawing. She is the world’s utmost authority.

I like how there’s a quantity box beside ‘add to cart’, despite the cost of US $39,999. Can I get a discount if I buy a dozen? I wonder how Costco acquired it in the first place?

Apparently, some art dealer in San Francisco struck a deal to distribute the art at Costco for the same 14 percent mark-up that other suppliers have. See http://www.marginalrevolution.com/marginalrevolution/2004/02/picasso_at_your.html.
