What a 2.5 Gigabyte Photo Looks Like

Last fall I remember seeing an article about a 10 GB camera, but I can’t find it now. It featured a photo of a mountain, and a remarkably clear zoom of a bird. In the meantime, Kleffman Style points us to this rendering of what a 2.5 GB photo looks like. You’ll note that this photo encompasses at least one city block, yet you can easily read the license plate of cars that must be, what, at least hundres of metres from the photographer.

    That really is utterly astounding.

As drive space and camera technologies increase, is this not the kind of surveilance that will eventually become commonplace. (i did say eventually).

Playing with the site gave me the same feeling as in tv shows where they zoom in on a dodgy vhs tape, and the main character goes ‘zoom in a bit more’ and does so without any blur or pixelation.

  2. Darren Says:

Indeed. I refer to that as the can you clean that up a little? effect.

  3. Calvin Says:

The photo is actually a mosaic of much smaller photos taken with a fairly standard resolution digital camera with the addition of a good zoom lens and a tripod. This is evident by a few anomalies including the half-bus-half-car in the middle of the road. But none the less, it is still impressive.

If you are interested, the picture is of a part of the Technical University of Delft in the Netherlands. TNO is a company that has offices on the campus. On the horizon, the large skyscrapers belong to the adjacent city of Den Haag.

If what calvin says is true, that’s incredible. Thanks for the information. I’ve seen real pictures of this resolution but this technique is quite impressive as well.

  5. Robert Says:

Justin, can I get a link for where you’ve seen real pictures of this resolution? I’m also hoping for a link to that 10 gig camera. If it exists, I’m interested in purchasing it.
