The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Trailer

When I’m home alone, and I read or watch something on my PC that really pleases me, I tend to applaud. I know, it’s shameful the things we do when we’re by ourselves.

Via Waxy, I’ve just watched the first non-teaser trailer (MOV) for The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. I clapped both times. In truth, I’m just so pleased to see this movie come to fruition that I doubt I’ll watch it with much objectivity. The trailer looks great–the Vogons look pretty much exactly as I imagined them. The cast is satisfactorily unrecognizable–a useful trick when taking on much-loved adaptations.

I’m slightly worried that so few of the actors (and the voice-over dude on the trailer) are British, but hopefully they’ll retain enough of the exceptional dry wit of the book.

Right, they’ve already done TV episodes and a radio show in British accents, and besides, I read the series with a British accent in my mind, so not doing it in the big-time movie for it should be a nice change of pace.

I clap too when I see something I really like. Um, I also do a smiliar excited little clap (and a “yaaa” or a “woo hoo”) in front of others when something small but important makes me happy, and it always gets a laugh.

Can’t wait to see the movie!

Hmmm…

I thought Zaphod’s ship was supposed to be shaped like a running shoe…

Minor nitpick aside, it looks just awesome!

I’d forgotten that they were working on the movie until I saw your post, so thanks!!!

I’m less than impressed. However, I absolutely adore, adore, adore the BBC miniseries and can’t imagine anyone improving upon it.

What the hell did they do to Zaphod’s second head?! And why does Marvin look like anime? :/

I’ll still watch it as soon as I can, but I suspect I’ll still prefer the television miniseries (which I downloaded recently, and mmm, it’s lovely!)

Zaphod’s second head… I was wondering that too, until on the second or third viewing of the trailer I saw it. About three quarters of the way through you see Zaphod’s head tip back to reveal a second “face” in his neck area. Also his third hand is the one that hits the button. Not the best solution to the second head, but it’s there, kinda. It’s easier to spot if you pause the movie and move the slider around until you see it.

Am I going to sound really stuffy if I express the opinion that experience has taught us Brits that Americans tend to ruin our books, films, plays, ideas?

I mean, look what they did with our language…

Ooh. I hate this feeling. The anticipation of a quite likely well-done movie combined with the deep faith that it’ll have been FUBAR’d.

Britcom always, always, always loses something in the translation–either because it’s been censored (Monty Python), or dubbed (Everything, {including the Teletubbies!}).

Fortunately, the BBC doesn’t fret about being faithful to the book, the “original” series, or anything else.

This may let us enjoy the film to the fullest as a purely separate event.
