Lazy Web Request: Recording Streaming Audio

I’m looking for a simple, preferably-free utility that will record an audio stream for me. I’ve got some free tool–Creative Audio Stream Recorder 2–which you feed a URL, schedule the session and it records whatever comes down that URL. However, I’m trying to record this BBC concert. When you click “listen to the latest programme”, it pops up a fancy BBC window, and seems to obfuscate the stream’s URL.

Clearly I’m an ignoramus when it comes to this sort of thing. Any suggestions?

A bit of spelunking in the page’s source code would seem to reveal this as the

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/shows/rpms/radio3/mixingit.rpm

Can’t verify on this computer, but I can download that and it does provide an rtsp:// url, so it may just work. It might even be the content you’re looking for!

Audio Hijack should do the job, although I’ve never understood how it works.

I use WireTap, which records all sounds made by the computer. You just have to be careful not to let any of the computer’s other programs running to beep or make alarm noises or anything. It works well for my podcasting, though.

I think both programs are Mac-only. Not sure which platform you’re on.

I use AudioHijackPro for all of my This American Life time-shifting needs.

AHP is for the Mac. It works by capturing sound only from the certain application you specify it to. So, hypothetically, while it’s capturing audio from RealOne Player I could be listening iTunes, or playing a game or whatever–those other noises wouldn’t get recorded. (I say hypothetically because on my G3/600Mhz iBook, I usually let it alone while it’s recording so I don’t get any skips in the MP3 it’s making. On a more cutting-edge machine I’m sure it’d be fine.)

Yeah, had the same problem trying to get the latest Hitchhikers series. Just used a freeware audio recorder & set the record source to the Wave Out mix - hardly the most sophistocated way of doing it but clean as long as I didn’t have the rest of the machine going ‘bing’ at tha same time.

Couldn’t be bothered getting into scheduling, but I imagine you could set up something just using Windows Scheduler?

One solution is a combination of Project URL Snooper to find the correct URL, which is then pasted into Streambox VCR.

With Project URL Snooper, you can search incoming traffic for the streaming URLs by sniffing the packet data coming over your network card, if it is supported, or alternately, search the last 5,10,20 mins (it’s configurable) of downloaded files.

This method rarely fails to find the proper link, no matter how deeply embedded the source is in a web page, although encrypted URLs are becoming more common.

One advantage of streambox VCR is that it will automatically re-start an interrupted stream.

Just start Total Recorder hit record button. Start your audio stream. Finish save file and burn to disc

can i ask where you got the ASR software? i have a soundblaster w/ original installation disk that says it should have this program but it doesn’t seem to be there.
