Our Most Played Songs

A Penny For points to the Unofficial Appple Weblog, where Laurie wants to know what you’re listening to.

If everyone reading this would please list (via the comments) the 5 most-played songs in their iTunes library, I’d appreciate it :) I figure TUAW has a pretty broad readership so I should see a rather eclectic mix of stuff.

We needn’t limit it to iTunes–what are your five most-played songs? No lying or embellishing is allowed. If Kris Kros’s “Jump Around” is at number one, you’ve got to own up. Here’s what I’ve got:

1. “This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody) - Talking Heads
2. “I Fall in Love Too Easy” - Chet Baker
3. “Noah’s Dove” - 10,000 Maniacs
4. “Real Bad News (live)” - Aimee Mann
5. “The Blower’s Daughter” - Damien Rice

Ah, heck, here are the next five.

6. “Since I Fell For You” - Ella Fitzgerald
7. “Super Duper Love” - Joss Stone
8. “Small Black Box” - Michael Penn
9. “River (live)” - Travis
10. “Hello in There” - 10,000 Manaics

Of course, Heisenberg’s at work here. As I check out my most-listened-to songs, I’m listening to them again, thereby extending their lead. On the other hand, this exercise has encouraged me to make a smart playlist of the 4323 songs that have been played one or fewer times.

Try audioscrobbler

It’s a social network designed around what people listen to. You install a plugin, and it keeps track for you.

Great way to meet people with similar tastes, and also find a whole bunch of new music.

I listen mostly on my iPod shuffle, so my listening habits aren’t entirely well reflected in my iTunes most-played list, but anyway:

1. “Pocketbook” - one of my own songs. (How vain.)
2. “Baby It’s You” - The Beatles
3. “Soul Sauce” - Cal Tjader
4. “I Try” - Macy Gray
5. “Hella Good” - No Doubt
6. “The Stake” - Steve Miller Band
7. “Drive My Car” - The Beatles
8. “Hard to Handle” - The Black Crowes
9. “Slim Jenkins’ Place” - Booker T & the MGs
10. “Watching the Detectives” - Elvis Costello & the Attractions

Overall, surprisingly un-embarrassing.

Point of pickiness: “Jump Jump” is by Kriss Kross, “Jump Around” is by House of Pain. And yes, I did know that. However, you listen to Michael Penn, so all is forgiven.

Also, try a smart playlist with the least-recently played songs. Mine often gives me the nice “Ah - I haven’t heard that for a while” feeling.
