When I first saw the Sin City trailer, I was really impressed by its unusual look. In particular, I admired the way it didn’t look like every other rubber suit, comic book adaptation.
Now we see just how loyal the movie has been to the visual style of the comic book. This page has a series of side-by-side comparisons of frames from the comic and stills from the film. The similarities are astonishing. In some cases, they’re basically identical.
I guess that’s what happens when the comic book author is co-director. There’s a good interview with Frank Miller about the making of the film here.
I’m really looking forward to this film, I think I’ll have to stop reading reviews (or only read negative ones) so my expectations don’t become even more elevated.
I really enjoyed it. It was a simple movie, entertaining and fun, visually incredible. Good storytelling of a clean, simple story. There was also lots of blood, violence, and titty.
The movie is, in about 95% of places, shot-for-shot identical with the comic – I compared it with my comicbook-geek-boyfriend’s copy after after I got home from watching the movie.
In fact, for most of the production they didn’t even storyboard, they just used the comic book. According to Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics the language of film and comic books isn’t all that different, so it’s not surprising. What is surprising is how Robert Rodriguez’s directing gave the film the same “look” as ink and paper without sacrificing details or distracting the audience.
