Radio advertising has come a long way in 30 years. It’s hilarious to hear how they’re pitching the movie in 1977 (thank you, Movie Marketing Blog). They’re so utterly unaware of the cultural movement that the movie shall become.
Do they advertise movies on the radio today? I rarely listen to the radio, and then only to the ad-free CBC.
Jack A friend has the original trilogy on LaserDisc which includes the original trailers for Star Wars. Man, were they stinky… I think the cheesy catch phrase at the end was “A story of a boy… a girl… and A UNIVERSE!”
Jes Funny. I heard a radio ad for the new Star Wars movie on my way to work this morning.
As far as I can tell, most radio ads for movies are simply the soundtracks of the ads for TV—often exactly the same, with the same sound effects and dialogue snippets, even when they make no sense without the visuals. The narration (“In a world… where there is no law… one man… had to take a stand!”) tends to work without the clips, so I guess it doesn’t seem worth editing something together that’s made specifically for radio most of the time.
Matthew Harris Hello, 1977 Star Wars had several campaigns for different areas of the country. I recieved the generic radio spots and campaign “E” which has fifteen :30 second spots. Each spot had a cliffhanger story connecting it to the next spot. They are really cool. Anyone interested in hear a few can e-mail me at moviewithmatthew@aol.com.
I don’t mind. I kept alot of posters, pictures, TV spots and some radio spots for memories sake.

jim All I remember was hearing beeping and blooping and wondering what was going on. If not for Time or Newsweek showing some stills, no one would’ve known what it was about.
