Tell Me About My Computer

Ever wanted a really complete list of everything installed on your Windows machine? Belarc Advisor can help:

The Belarc Advisor builds a detailed profile of your installed software and hardware, including Microsoft Hotfixes, and displays the results in your Web browser. All of your PC profile information is kept private on your PC and is not sent to any web server.

The Add/Remove Programs list just doesn’t cut it. It’s a pretty nifty utility–it found 106 programs installed on my machine, while Add/Remove Programs only found about 60.

My preferred way of learning what programs are installed is:

    $>ls /usr/local/bin

… but that’s just one of the advantages I get for running linux :)

At first glance, it looked like a huge security hole, as I thought it was a browser-based app (as opposed to just an app that outputs html). Given that it’s downloadable, I’m less concerned, though it would be better if it were open source – I doubt it’s doing anything proprietary, just scraping through the windows registry.

I’m platform-agnostic. I’ve got a Windows desktop machine and a PowerBook that I use for traveling and such.
