My New Blog: Geeky Traveller

I’m launching a new blog. It’s called Geeky Traveller, and it’s “a site dedicated to the places geeks go, the things they do when they get there, and the gadgets they play with along the way”. The logic on blogs is that you should write about your passions. These are two of mine, and I’ve wanted to try a topic-specific blog for a while (this one, as you may have noticed, is all over the map). I think there’s plenty of space in the travel blog space, though I don’t aspire to be as huge (or as prolific) as Gridskipper. Topics so far include travel-related gadgets, hotel reviews and geeky destinations.

I also have aspirations to be a travel writer some day, or at least to occasionally be paid to write about travel. As such, I’m not going to shy away from advertising on Geeky Traveller. For now it’s just Google AdWords, but if Expedia wants to buy some ad space, I’ll certainly take their call. I promise there won’t be any heinous whack-the-monkey ads, though.

The plan is to post three to five times a week. I travel often, but fortunately there’s plenty of travel-related content on other blogs to write about as well. For example, I recently cited a hotel review from Shel Holtz’s new business travel blog, Road Weary. I may occasionally cross-post something to this site, if I feel it’s particularly compelling.

A hundred thank yous are due to the Raincity boys, who took my notion of a hitchhiking robot and turned it into a gorgeous, whimsical design. Thanks also to the good people at Bryght who are hosting the site and specifically Richard, who patiently answered my tedious questions during setup.

  1. Congrats on the new blog. If you need some industry-specific info about travel and the systems that run the biz, let me know. I worked for a few years building out the web technology systems for a local travel heavy hitter, big in leisure travel.

BTW: When you hit tab to go from field to field in this comment form, I end up selecting the links at the top of the page (Home | About | CV | Portfolio | Contact).

  2. Robot looks great. May I suggest you lower his/her hitch hiking arm? It looks more like a ‘thumbs up’ than a hitchhiker.

  3. I think you need a copy of Lonely Planet’s Guide to Experimental Travel. It’s the perfect book for travel geeks.

There’s 40 experiments to try, such as, go to your favourite bar and order your favourite drink. Ask whoever serves you what their favourite bar and drink is. Once you’ve finished your drink go to the recommendation and repeat. Designated drivers are required if you’re alcohol drinking, but you could do this with food, ice cream, whatever.

It’s a fun way to discover your own city, but also to discover new cities. Like, if you’re travelling with your wife to a new city, go on a scavenger hunt for each other. Leave your hotel at separate times and try to find each other in the new city. Where would your mate go? Have a fall back plan too, like meet you at the Tower at 2 pm if we haven’t found each other. You know this one could go horribly wrong.
