A Very Community Weekend

Through no fault of my own, I ended up having a very ‘think-locally’ weekend. On Friday’s very rainy Canada Day, while running some errands, I watched a bit of the Yaletown Grand Prix. This is the second year for this downtown bike race. Despite the slick surface, I didn’t see any wipeouts. I did take some photos. This is my favourite–it reminds me a bit of Boccioni’s Dynamism of a Cyclist.

On Saturday, we headed out to Port Moody to do the shoreline trail. After our hike (it’s more of a walk, really), we stumbled upon Golden Spike Days, an annual community fair. They had everything the term ‘community fair’ implies–a dunking tank, a petting zoo and cancan dancers. I took some more photos there (caution, cute animals, dancing children and freaky balloons ahead).

Finally, the Vancouver Jazz Festival has been going on for the past couple of weeks. Last week I saw Sophie Milman, and tonight I’m going to see Ladysmith Black Mambazo. As it happens, I can listen to and watch the free stage in David Lam Park from my apartment.
