Ellen Page Gets Her Big Break in X-Men 3
I was pleased to read on The Movie Blog that Halifax’s own Ellen Page will be playing Kitty Pryde (aka Shadowcat) in X-Men 3:
Presumably Kitty’s role is going to be bumped up a little this time, but to what end, we don’t yet know. In the comics she has a, ahem, close friendship with Colossus, the steel-skinned mutant who appeared briefly but memorably during the school invasion scenes in X2, but we can’t say for sure yet if that romantic subplot will get a look-in in the film.
I have a theory that young teenage girls generally make very effective actresses. Acting involves drawing on emotions, which, for young women, are always near the surface. I enjoyed Ms. Page’s work in Marion Bridge and Wilby Wonderful (I’d recommend them both)–she reminded me of a young Scarlett Johansson in The Horse Whisperer.
Kitty’s character had cameos in both earlier films. Her super power is that she can walk through walls–a small plot problem, as it reduces the trap-the-X-men scenarios.
