Tivo for Your PC, Again

Ever since I heard about MythTV , the build-your-own Tivo (and sundry other options), I’ve wanted this functionality on a PC. I’ve never wanted to build my own–I want somebody to do it for me. At Gnomedex, I met a guy from SnapStream, who apparently does just that:

Whether you want to record every M*A*S*H rerun that ever airs, or you’re looking to diversify your program palette, Beyond TV has the features to make your dream a reality. Search for shows by genre, actor, director, or title. Find your favorite series and schedule repeat recordings from your PC or over the Internet. Forget endless commercials…you never have to sit through them again with Beyond TV’s SmartSkip.

I’m unlikely to, for example, want to see all the available shows starring Dirk Benedict, but it sounds appealing.

I built one of these things. I put it in a sweet old school radio…

I’d love to do a start-up to produce an independant PRV for the Canadian markey based on MythTV or Freevo or something. I came to the conclusion, though, that it probably wasn’t viable; there has to be some reason Tivo, ReplayTV, etc never made a move into the Canadian market…

Have you looked at just buying a pre-configured Windows Home Media machine? Or are you specifically after getting something built on an open source platform?

Laurie: I’m under the impression that the Windows machine is full of DRM and other evilness, so I’d prefer not to go that route.
