Movies I Must Watch If They’re On TV

There’s this meme going around where you answer a bunch of questions about yourself (here’s an example). One question asks about “movies I would watch over and over again”. Some years ago, another friend asked me what movies I must watch if I’m channel-surfing and see them in progress.

In the spirit of partial meme participation, here’s my top five:

  • The Great Escape
  • The Princess Bride
  • Unforgiven
  • Spartan
  • The Truman Show

The number six movie is slightly embarassing, in that it’s Back to the Future. In fact, I spotted it on TV and watched a good half-hour. That’s what started this whole line of thinking, actually.

Back to the future (1, 2 or 3) are amongst my guilty pleasures. Top though is groundhog day, which I watch every year (guess which day)

Back to the Future 3 is a bit much for me, as there’s very little time travelling and a whole lot of “look, it’s your favourite characters as cowboys!” BttF 2, however, is a great film that plays with all sorts of time travelling consequences.

I saw Gattaca on TV th other day and watched it - not a bad flick. I’m embarrassed that it took me so long to realize that the title contains letters from the genetic code.

What’s so embarassing about liking Back to the Future? It’s a fond childhood memory for me :)

If THAT’S the guiltiest of your movie pleasures, my friends, you have nothing to fear.

*sagely shuts up before revealing any more*

Princess Bride is a favorite of mine, both as a book and as a film. If you haven’t read the book, you should.
