The War for Your Photo Printing Dollars

The Business 2.0 blog has an interesting piece with nifty charts discussing the present and future states of the photo printing business.

While four years ago home printers accounted for nearly 90% of digital print output, today they make up less than half. Home printing (48%) is duking it out with retail printing (42%), and online printing (9%) is bringing up the rear.

I wrote a column last year about the future of photo storage. My meagre advice was to print the darned things out–that’s the most reliable medium. I’m afraid I didn’t get into whether or not you should buy your own printer.

Speaking of online printing, hey Flickr, remember your homies north of the 49th? We want to print out our photos too.

  1. Printing at home never made much sense, although some people were keen on it for a while.

My not particularly updated table of Canadian online photo printing sites is available at

I have also done a recent survey of digital picture frames (LCD photo displays) available in Canada at

If you actually want to have an ongoing daily experience of your photos, a digital picture frame makes more sense than printing them out, although you can get a LOT of prints for the price of a frame.
