Over at the Blogs Canada election blog, I just read a great idea. For some reason, it’s never occurred to me to watch the election outside of my home. This year, I’m going to. Does anybody want to join me?
More importantly, what pub should we select? Presumably it can’t be a sports bar. We need something a little brainy, some pub that puts on airs. Any ideas?
UPDATE: The Jolly Taxpayer is apparently closed. I’m leaning toward the Library Square Public House, but I need to confirm that they’re going to show the election. There’s a Canucks game that night, but it’s away against St. Louis and therefore should be totally over by the time the election coverage starts at 8:00pm.
Steamworks?
I have no brilliant ideas for location, but I’d definitely be up for an election pub-night.
Perhaps one of the “public houses”? Either Denman, or Library Square? I haven’t been to either, but the names seem appropriately “everyman” and democratic for the purpose.
I wonder if an electoral drinking came can be conjured up to accompany the festivities…
The Jolly Alderman (though technically a sports bar) has always been a place where I’ve gone in the past to meet for various political events. I like Steamworks as well though it tends to be lacking in the big screen tv supply.
The Jolly Taxpayer seems suitable.
The Taxpayer is a bit of a dive, but that seems appropriate. Unless anybody’s got a better suggestion, we’ll go with that.
I tried to watch the U-S election at a bar in Nelson. My advice – call ahead and ask what they’ll play…or have a big enough group to control the screen.
(One bar refused to switch off the sports. Another couldn’t find political analysis besides PBS. Which I like in theory, but it didn’t have enough flashy dohickeys on screen for my election night tastes.)
I’m interested in joining up for the event, and the last time I visited the Jolly Taxpayer there were people smoking. Even if they are playing sports in most of the bar it seems likely that they’ll cordon off a section for the political fans and switch one or two TVs.
Now, can we agree on which station we’ll watch? CBC, Global, CTV, er, City?
Jolly Taxpayer is now closed… being turned into…take a guess… more condos!
If I’m free that night, I’m there. Seeing as the Taxpayer’s gone, I’m agnostic as to location, but I’d prefer a place with wi-fi. As for TV stations, both CBC and CTV are pretty good; CBC’s presentation tends to be stuffier and more restrained than CTV’s (the latter net’s Mike Duffy and Craig Oliver are both entertaining once they get fired up), but the MotherCorp will probably have more boots on the ground and a wider selection of talking heads.
Yeah, Jolly Taxpayer! Now all I have to do is remember the date of the election…
Who’s going to do the banner? “Vote…and drink. Meet at the Jolly Taxpayer”
I vote for CBC, and suggest the Irish Heather.
If I’m not working that night, I’d like to join you.
