Boxing Out the Globe's Population

WorldPopulationTreemapI’m not sure how I got there, but Neoformix points to this super-groovy tree map created by the Hive Group. It’s a little Java app that shows the countries of the world and their relative population. You can drag the little sliders around for different views, or sort by continent.

I had no idea, for example, that Mexico has three times the population of Canada. I’m not sure what I thought the population of Mexico was, but not 105 million.

I saw Hans Rosling at TED earlier this year. His talk, where he highlights a number of his visualizations on GapMinder, is available on the TED blog at http://tedblog.typepad.com/tedblog/2006/06/hans_rosling_on.html

Definitely worth 18 minutes.
