Gallery of Ghost Towns

Via the 9 (she’s a bit scary herself), here’s a site dedicated to documenting ghost towns:

This is our photo collection of more then 1300 pictures from 174 ghost towns and historic places in the United States.

Here you find photos of:

  • western towns, sometimes completely abandoned, sometimes still lively

  • old gold mines
  • old mills, where the ore was processed
  • old cemeteries
  • and much more

What about Canadian ghost towns, you ask? The Intarweb is more than happy to oblige. Plus, of course, there’s always Flickr.

Damn, no ghost towns of Quebec. I know of a few, but they’re too far north for me to go on a week-end hike. ;)

The ever-interesting googlesightseeing blog featured a completely empty island in Ontario a week or so ago:

It inspired me to read up on some of the abandoned mining towns here in BC. Perhaps a wild party and/or walking around naked is in order?

How about Phoenix? An old mining company town near Greenwood off of Hwy 3 heading East into the Kootenays. very weird, when they closed the mine the dismantled the town. The roads and foundations of the houses are still there though, as is a WWI memorial. I always wonder if it will come back one day (what’s in a name?)
