They’re Adapting Stephen King’s “The Mist”

The Ghostly Queen of TsawassenAccording to Cinemablend (via the Movie Blog), Oscar-nominated writer Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile) is adapting Stephen King’s short story “The Mist” for the big screen:

Doing a horror movie is something of a departure from his previous movies. Darabont says, “It’s time to get down and dirty and make a nasty little character-driven gut-punch horror movie.” Apparently, The Mist is a project he and King have been kicking around together for years, but it got shelved in favor of what he calls “classier” work like Shawshank.

“The Mist” was published in 1985 as part of a collection of King short stories. In it, a thick fog or mist engulfs a small town and kills anyone caught up in it. Survivors take refuge in a supermarket, where they end up under siege by murderous beasties trying to get in.

It’s a pretty great short story, and a classic ‘locked room’ scarefest.

Speaking of mist, I continued my convalescence on Pender Island this weekend (here’s a review of Poet’s Cove resort), and took some photos of the foggy return voyage. I was also pleased to capture a llama, two goats and a pony in the same shot.

How is “The Mist” different from John Carpenter’s 1980 movie “The Fog” or its 2005 remake? Wish they would stop making copycat movies.

‘The Mist’ is, by far, one of my favourite Stephen King short stories. I’ve always imagined the supermarket the characters end up in to be similar to one I visited frequently growing up in Penticton, fronted by a huge wall of plate glass windows in various colours. (Does anyone have a photo of the Super-Valu at 450 Martin Street? Let me know!)

As for what makes ‘The Mist’ different from ‘The Fog’, I’ll simply say this: it’s what’s inside that counts.

Poet’s Cove? The developers desecrated an indigenous burial ground when they built that resort. Human bones sticking out of piles of dirt, over 50 corpses backhoed up. Terry Glavin mentioned it in this article in the Straight: http://www.straight.com/content.cfm?id=12335

Heather, there was an exhibit here called “Super-Valu Redux“.

And I also pictured it that way, that is, one of those 1960s rolling arched buildings with great glass fronts.

I’ll have to seek out King’s description and see where we each got that idea.

The difference between The Mist and The Fog is huge. The Mist brings forth monsters and Fog is a ghost story about retribution, whereas The Mist is a random thing.
