The Passionate Eye Rarely Disappoints

You know, I’m always pleased when I’m channel surfing and see that The Passionate Eye is on CBC Newsworld. It’s a program that airs documentaries, and not necessarily those produced by the CBC. Tonight I watched a good chunk of Dogtown and Z-Boys, a doc about the history of skateboarding and is, presumably, the basis for Lords of Dogtown.

I liked the fictional movie, but the documentary is great. It’s clearly made with a lot of love, and there’s apparently a lot of source material to draw upon (apparently skateboarders were as obsessed about photographing and filming each other back then as they are today). Sean Penn narrates, which is neither here nor there, but it’s well worth watching if you get a chance.

I caught that as well and it was, as usual, very engaging. Anyone who missed it can rent the doc at local Rogers stores, possibly at Blockbuster and others as well.

I actually saw this late at night on Prime about 2 or 3 weeks ago. Being a 10 year old kid in the late 1970s meant I knew a lot of these guys by name from skateboarding magazines. It was definitely interesting to take a trip back almost 30 years.

I saw “Dogtown and Z-boys” in the theatre and loved it and rented “Lords of Dogtown” and loved it.

Bizarre fact- The director of “Thirteen” and “Lords of Dogtown” (Catherine Hardwicke) is also the director of the upcoming “The Nativity Story.”

There are a group of old school boarders who were inspired by the Z-boys who regularly get together for social events and, of course, skateboarding at one of the many excellent public skate parks.

My buddy Drew, a 40-something sk8tr who rides a big deck, turned me onto the Dogtown movie when it was first playing at the Ridge, etc. There are few movies today that catch the authentic milieu of the pre-punk mid-70s as well as this doc does. Gotta love that Ted Nugent in the sountrack :-).

I should have mentioned the old school sk8trs are based in Greater Vancouver.
