Is Forsberg Going Country?

I didn’t hold out much hope for the Canucks acquiring the oft-injured but immensely talented Peter Forsberg. It turns out that, according to TSN via James Mirtle, Forsberg is headed to Nashville:

Sources tell TSN the Nashville Predators have agreed to trade Scottie Upshall, Ryan Parent, a first round pick and a third round pick to the Philadelphia Flyers for Peter Forsbeg.

Nashville’s a great team, and they just got better. The Canucks aren’t a Stanley Cup contender this year, so it’s all a bit moot from the local fan’s perspective. Still, I’m glad to see that Peter the Great didn’t end up in Calgary or Minnesota (not that he was likely to go to either city).

Plus, that’s a ridiculously high price to pay for a fragile 33-year-old rental player. Parent is a first round pick projected to be a top 4 defenceman. Upshall was draft sixth overall, and has disappointed so far, but could easily become a top six forward. Add to that a low first and third round draft picks?

If Nashville wins the Stanley Cup, they’ll look brilliant. Otherwise, that’s too much to give up for Forsberg.

Speaking as someone with Forsberg in my pool, that is WAAAAAY to much too much for Peter-I-Am-Made-Of-Glass-Forsberg.

I’m not going to pretend you didn’t say it (about the Canucks), I’m just not sure of the justification. Decent team with strong penalty killing and great goaltending, improving as the season goes along? Seems as likely as most cup finalists of years gone by…

Declan: It’s probably just a lifetime of disappointment talking. In truth, they do have much of the formula for a good, modern-day playoff team: solid goaltending and team defence. They’ll need some more scoring, though, as things tighten up in the post-season. And they don’t have much depth at either forward or defence. How hosed would this team be if one of the Sedins got injured, for example?

I know what you mean about the lifetime of disappointment (I always been either a Leafs or Canucks fan). The lack of depth is a good point, especially people with offensive talent - the trouble with losing one of the Sedins is you lose two of your best players at once!
