Five Safe(ish) Rookies for Your NHL Hockey Pool in 07-08

Knowing that I’m a hockey fan, somebody asked me today which rookie he should pick in his pool. I haven’t been following the training camps and pre-season very closely (though I’ve been enjoying the FanHouse’s team-by-team previews), so I had to go do a bit of research. These five rookies seem to be likely to make their respective teams and shine in 2007-08:

  • Jonathan Toews – Chicago
  • Nicklas Backstrom – Washington
  • Benoit Pouliot – Wild
  • Peter Mueller – Coyotes
  • Jack Johnson (D) – Blues

And these three seem less certain, but likely candidates as well:

  • Bobby Ryan – Ducks
  • Igor Grigorenko – Redwings
  • Erik Johnson (D) – Kings

Like I say, I’m no expert–who are you picking?

Like your picks, let me add a couple…

Not sure if these will count as rookies or not, but first year NHLers worth watching:

Jaroslav Hlinka (Avs) – led Czech elite league in scoring, already clicking in Avs camp.

Cory Murphy (Panthers) – Finnish league MVP expected to contribute to Panthers power play.

Nah, I’m afraid the drafting and such would be too hard to run from Malta. I might participate with a list if somebody else runs one, but 7:00pm PST is 4:00am locally, so that’s a bit tricky for me.

One more you cannot forget…Igor Grigorenko.

Puckateer: I’m not following the Wings very closely, but the reports I’ve seen thus far have been very mixed on Grigorenko. Some suggest that he’ll start the year in the minors.
