Juno Looks Terrific

I just watched the trailer for Juno, the new movie from Thank You For Smoking director Jason Reitman (who, I recently learned, is married to a high school classmate of mine–is it appropriate to update his Wikipedia entry to add that fact, or is it none of our business?).

I really liked Thank You For Smoking, and Juno looks equally off-beat and entertaining. The cast is rife with talent. I’ve really admired Ellen Page’s work. Like Sarah Polley and Molly Parker before her, she’s been pretty savvy about the roles she takes, combining independent and mainstream movies. It’ll be hard to go wrong with Jason Bateman, Jennifer Garner, J.K. Simmons and Allison Janney. That’s some serious comic talent.

Apparently it was released in Canada on September 8, but I don’t see it playing in any Vancouver cinemas yet.

Talking about this Wikipedia entry, it’s been updated. There is some ambiguity though, IMDB lists his spouse while his MySpace page says he’s single… both links are available on the Wikipedia entry;-)

Well it does say right at the beginning of the trailer that it was an entry in the Toronto Film Festival. I’m going to go out on a limb and assume that’s the ‘Canadian release’.

Which explains why it’s not here in Vancouver yet.

I totally want to see this now; thanks for posting it.

About the Wikipedia entry: Go ahead and add that he’s married to so-and-so, but skip the part about how she’s a former classmate of Darren Barefoot. :-)

September 8 was the date of the first festival screening in Canada, at TIFF (which I suppose you could consider the “Canadian premiere”). The world premiere was at Telluride a few weeks ago. Even though the Jason Reitman, Michael Cera and Ellen Page are all Canadian, it’s an American film, and as such it’s getting actual distribution. As of now it looks like Fox Searchlight will be platform releasing it in Canada and the US on December 4, which platform release may or may not include Vancouver. But given the early Oscar buzz on the film, and especially given the crazy success of Cera’s “Superbad” earlier this summer, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Fox Searchlight open it wide. Either way, it’ll be in theatres near you in December, and you’ll know about it.
