Things We Can’t Find in Malta
At least, we certainly can’t find them on Gozo. I’ve looked in every bookstore I could find, and though they have a breadth of English magazines, including some computer ones, there’s no sign of Wired (of course, I’ve had that problem in Vancouver, too). Not surprisingly, there are also no NHL season preview and hockey pool magazines around, either.
The same goes for the Twizzlers, and licorice products in general (James and Monique, this doesn’t get you off the hook–we need to stockpile!). I can’t speak with the same certainty about the hand sanitizer, but our searches thus far have come up empty.
Many thanks to our latest guest who delivered them from the Great White North.

I had that same licorice problem when I was in Europe, in particular the cherry ones. The other thing I had trouble finding was Root Beer. It’s funny how you crave this stuff more when you can’t find it.
Darren, you’ll have to feast on the sweets of Malta. Found any interesting snack foods while you’re there? Do tell.

What about Canadian beer? Or do u not drink?

Patricia: The sweets are all about the figs and dates, which is why I’ve lost a bunch of weight. They’re all kind of semi-sweet. We just discovered a bakery that produces chocolatey things, which is good news.
Catherine: Hmm…I guess it’s more about red licorice–the allsorts aren’t quite the same.
Roshan: I don’t drink, but my wife and our guests do. In truth, I think they’ve been too busy exploring all the local and regional libations to worry about Canadian beer.

Eccardt) is a high-school friend of my wife. That having been noted, I would recommend this volume even if I had no idea who the author was. The small nations of Europe (as well as small nations in general) have held a fascination for me for years. When we received this book, I read it avidly, and was able to learn fascinating information about the character and history of various of the small states of Europe, despite my already vaster than normal knowledge of these countries. I felt that I was transported to the countries he was describing. My wife had to beg me to finish so that she could read it. Mr. Eccardt has used his time well in researching the subjects thoroughly. He includes not only information the traveler venturing into these countries would want to have at hand, but historical, geographical, and practical information any “armchair traveler” would want as well. Students needing to write a paper on one of these countries would do well to consult this tome in their preparation. Writers wanting to set a novel in one of these countries (or in a fictitious state in Europe) could glean useful information for the setting of said work from this book. If you plan to go to Europe, take this book with you! I personally would have loved to have access to this kind of resource when I was in junior high school, high school, and even in college. On the plus side, this one is loaded with high quality pictures. And the maps are also of high quality and easy to navigate. It gives very useful suggestions, tips and plans about the destination. One gets a quick overview of all attractions and can easily design a trip tailoring to one’s interest. On the minus side, this book can never be used alone, and must be used together with another guidebook with lots of facts. It is not intended to be one all-included guidebook anyway. What can be absolutely added is hotel information, especially for a matured destination like Malta, there are definitely more hotels at all ranges to evaluate. What can be also included is information on links to other regional destinations, such as Sicilly and Tunisia. In general, it is a good handy book with nice pictures to look at. But you won’t survive on this book alone. The Religion: A Novel Amazon Price: $14.26 This is a splendid adventure with a bit of romance and sex thrown in. It is a book one wants to read without putting it down even to sleep. The questions the book raises about religion are especially topical. One does nope he will write sequels. Sword of Honour (The Bolitho Novels) Amazon Price: $10.85 I could not believe the turn this series took in the last 4-5 books: Bolitho and Herrick at each other’s throats, all the double entendre sex and romance, and then with this novel—killing off the fellow the whole series was built around! Not too smart to kill off your hero, Mr.Kent. The nephew is not a well fleshed-out character in any of the previous books and now the author wants to devote the remaining books to telling about his so-called adventures? Ridiculous! I wonder if all the romantic stuff sneaked in (it really does increase after book 15 or 16) after the author remarried a somewhat younger woman (see his website for author biography). Whatever the reason, Patrick O’Brian he ain’t and none of these books are as well written as the Aubrey-Maturin series, no matter how many reviewers have claimed it so. O’Brian was in a league of his own. Kent is in the mediocre one with many others. I stopped reading the series when finished with this book, and am currently looking for a new one to inform and entertain. The Jew of Malta (Dover Thrift Editions) Amazon Price: $2.00 Similar to Shakespeare’s commercial epicenter, Venice, Malta bubbles with the primordial ooze of modern business. As David Thurn says, “The Jew of Malta may be understood as symptomatic of one phase in the prehistory of capitalism.” Among other modern business practices, during the Italian Rennaissance, accounting found a rebirth and in the 16th century became common practice. By the end of Barabas’s opening scene, Malta seems as globalized as today’s economy. Malta is strategic to vilifying the Jew. Barabas is a merchant working the water hub of the Mediterranean, and like an overseer of a distribution center, squares his assets with his liabilities down to the last silverling. He dislikes accounting his petty cash, saying, “Fie, what a trouble `tis to count this trash!” (1.1.7). His irritation resonates today; like Barabas, large modern firms do not bother with accounting entries below certain dollar values, because of two reasons: time and money. Before “heaps of gold,” Barabas hoards his money, and the characterization broadcasts the grossest kind of cartoonish greed, like that of Ebeneezer Scrooge. Instead of entrepreneurial visionary, we see a miserly, selfish, abominable grotesque of greed. Barabas awaits his incoming ships, which creates a striking similarity to Antonio in The Merchant of Venice. However, more important than the mood of the merchant is his religion. The motivation of the Christian merchant seems to be the common good, while the Jew works strictly in self-interest. Like other great villains, Barabas keeps a master inventory of other people’s weaknesses. It is a terrifying joy to watch a great villain arrange characters into annihilating arrangements. He has no qualms holding scripture in one hand, a knife in the other, as he explains to Abigail, “religion / hides many mischiefs from suspicion” (1.2.283). To get revenge with the government, he looks past Ferneze to his family, to Ludowick. In a disturbing introspection, Barabas tells what he has learned from years of oppression under the Christians. We Jews can fawn like spaniels when we please; And when we grin we bite, yet are our looks As innocent and harmless as a lamb’s. I learned in Florence how to kiss my hand, Heave up my shoulders when they call me dog (2.3.20-24). Years of gross condescension and abuse taught Barabas cunning deceits, but that unfortunate education assists his revenge. Like an effective salesperson or manager, rather than lash out, he knows how to keep bridges intact, at least until he can ignite a blaze on his own terms. He knows to hold his tongue when provoked, to stoop in subordination when helpless, and to attack along appropriate avenues when the hour is right. Before revenge clouds his judgment, Barabas opposes violence and has no political aspirations. Violence leads to temporary gains: “Nothing violent / Oft have I heard tell, can be permanent” (1.1.131-132). A surprising insight comes from his statement where he admits a preference for Christian rulers, saying, “Give us a peaceful rule, make Christians kings / That thirst for so much principality” (1.1.133-134). He prefers to stay in the shadows, behind the halls of government and the public eye. This adds to his Machiavellian persona, and almost indicates that the Christians are his puppets, who play childish games of glory while he stockpiles wealth. This is a wonderfully evil notion, and here another mapping could be made to Enron, industrial deregulation, and greed. Those in positions of government perceive control, but in effect take the risk for the real operators beneath them. It is both exciting and nefarious to watch. Yet Barabas forgets his aversion to violence and political power. By the end of the play, he’s slashed and burned his way to the governor’s seat, and suddenly a high-profile bureaucrat, seeks to profit from his office and then magnanimously defer power back to Ferneze. Blinded by his successful raging revenge, once in power Barabas sees the danger: “I now am governor of Malta. True, / But Malta hates me, and in hating me, / My life’s in danger” (5.2.29-31). Worse yet, he tells himself, “by wrong thou got’st authority” (5.2.35). Now he’s pinned behind his earlier comment about the temporality of violence, and he cannot undo his power so easily. Instead of looking up at power, he is looking down, and now it is his weaknesses that are highlighted to the world. factbookredirect - Central Intelligence Agency Malta travel guide - Wikitravel Open source travel guide to Malta, featuring up-to-date information on … with only the three largest islands (Malta, Għawdex or Gozo, and Kemmuna or … Malta national football team - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia This Wikipedia encyclopaedia entry describes the national team. … On 11 October 2006, Malta managed a fourth competitive victory - a 2-1 triumph … What to Sell on eBay and Where to Get It Amazon Price: $18.45 I was a power seller on ebay for a full year but then ebay became so commercial that it made it impossible for the little guy to make any kind of living. Now it’s like an online retailer mall rather than a place for the home worker to make a living. But if you still want to give ebay a try then I would recommend this book. It’s very straight forward on what it takes to find products to sell. It teaches you how to find a niche and exploit it. […]
