Cognitive Dissonance in Blondie
From the Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (heh) department: what’s wrong with this comic (click for larger size)?
Dagwood’s dining companion (nice homo-erotic subtext, by the way) has a cell phone. That just seems so weird. Dagwood’s still wearing the same black suit and bowtie that he’s been wearing since 1930, and Blondie’s still keeping house, yet the world has moved on.
Looking around at other Blondie strips, I see computers and mentions of the Web and stuff. Here’s a note in Wikipedia about how the comic has changed to reflect the passing years.
Just like Dagwood himself, I guess I haven’t been paying enough attention to Blondie.

Darren, Blondie is no longer keeping house. She and Tootsie started a catering business a few years ago and it got a lot of attention. The strip has also modernized clothes, appliances and the office — I think they have flat panel TVs and so on.

Bill Keane’s been tracking Billy’s path through the neighbourhood via GPS since at least the 60s!

“Homo-erotic subtext” because… he’s eating next to a guy? I don’t get.

Blondie is, apparently, all OVAH the web…I think she was designing their website for the catering business last I checked.
But I have a tangential, yet amusing story. I was on the #10 bus once in the early days of cellphones, and a woman answered hers with “Yes, I’m just coming over the Lion’s Gate in the Beemer.” Yes, she really said that. And some guy in the seat opposite leaned waaaaaay over and yelled, “She’s ON THE BUS!” It was genius.
