Boring Site Note: Quick Tag Cloud

As an SEO experiment, I started tagging (in addition to the categories at left) my blog posts about, I don’t know, 15 months ago. It’s impossible to measure precisely, but I don’t think it’s had a significant effect. Last month tag-based pages only got 823 page views, and a mere 123 visitors came from Technorati. There may be unknown ancillary SEO benefits to tagging, but now I just enjoy inventing peculiar descriptors for my posts (see, for example, .

Thanks to Ultimate Tag Warrior, here’s a quick tag cloud of the 200 most popular tags on this site. Keep in mind that this only reflects, maybe, one-eighth of all the posts on this site. There’s no frickin’ way I’m going back and manually tagging the other 4000-odd posts.

malta vancouver gozo travel video morocco marketing hockey apple cbc Canada web20 movies flickr photos ebook music movie google gharb tv pr nhl youtube wikipedia social media Essaouira web design victoria twitter toronto rss green facebook contest canucks weird water soccer slate seo photo hotel football conference book villa sports media itunes history environment dublin shopping review podcast ireland gnomedex bc web 20 user experience trailer survey social media marketing second life search real estate question photography Italy hungary future fun flash game education climate change cinema capulet budapest boring site note blog africa writing world of warcraft wired windows web game USA theatre technology tags speaking seth godin school restaurant rabat poll os x northern voice new york times mashup marrakesh mahalo living abroad links laundry iraq ipod internet global warming fruit france food flash expat eighties commoncraft comment spam college clothing christianity cat canada day building books blogging advertising zombies widget wacky voip virtual worlds vienna vancity valetta update university tsn travis trailers tourists toilet telus telephony talk sponsorship south korea sicko rangers questions q politics police playoffs pender island pants once numbers novels myspace mundane macbook lolcats lazyweb law laptop jellyfish jbl invitation insect holiday harry potter harbour air happiness givemeaning gender game frames film email ecommerce driving digg desmogblog community comino clever charity cats catholicism cars brands brand boing boing blogger outreach bbc austria article apartment 2008

I’ve tried to be disciplined about not tagging entries with the same terms as I categorize them, but clearly I sometimes fail. I guess what happens is that I start writing about something, tagging each entry. Eventually I decide that it merits its own category, so I upgrade it. I might go back and remove the tags for malta, gozo, vancouver, travel, video, morocco and marketing to make the thing more useful.
