Three Quick Client Plugs

October 8th, 2007, No Comments »

I just wanted to highlight a few client-related projects that might interest:

  • A few weeks ago I blogged about our Greenest Photo Ever contest. We got a bunch (344 to be exact) of great submissions. The six finalists are now up on DeSmogBlog, and you can vote for your favourite. The photos are gorgeous–the contest was a reminder of the remarkable skills of so many Flickr users.
  • For local web developers, our client Nitobi is hosting a Hack Day on Saturday, October 20–there’s free pizza and beer. For more information and to RSVP, see Facebook or Upcoming.
  • For Dreamweaver-lovin’ web designers, Nitobi’s newest release features Dreamweaver extensions for their Ajax components. You can add a fancy spreadsheet grid or combobox without all that messy coding nonsense.

Client Plug: Submit to the Greenest Photo Ever Contest

September 6th, 2007, 7 Comments »

Not the Greenest Photo EverAs you may know, one of our clients over at Capulet is DeSmogBlog, a website dedicated to “to clearing the PR pollution that clouds climate change”.

As part of our ongoing online marketing activities for them, we launched a little contest on Flickr: the Greenest Photo Ever Contest:

The challenge is simple: take the greenest photo ever.

What does that mean? Whatever you want it to.

It can be literally a really green photo (but not of a green dress, that’s cruel). Or it can be a metaphorically green photo, whether that’s ecological or ‘green with envy’ or any other angle you can think of. In short, be creative!

In order to participate, you need a Flickr account (they’re free). Then just join the contest group, and submit a photo. You can use an existing photo from your Flickr photostream or take a new one. Complete rules and so forth are on the group page.

And there are prizes! There’s a pretty mundane point-and-shoot Sony digital camera, as well as two $100 Amazon or iTunes gift certificates.

Our group looks pretty sad at the moment, with its two little photos (and one of them is mine, which doesn’t really qualify, does it?). We’ve just launched, but I’d like to achieve some kind of happy critical mass as soon as possible. So go forth and submit.

Our Widget’s Featured on Apple’s Dashboard Site

June 29th, 2007, 2 Comments »

Our Widget Featured on Apple Dashboard WidgetsWe recently worked with the good people at Biro Creative to create an Apple desktop widget (and a Windows Vista gadget) for DeSmogBlog:

Our widget displays current DeSmogBlog news. Plus, it’s got a counter that shows the planet’s estimated accumulated carbon footprint since January 1, 2007.

To be honest, I didn’t think it’d be all that successful. The news is cool, but as for the counter, who wants a depressing reminder of planetary degradation on their desktop?

That shows how sound my instincts are. Yesterday I submitted it to Apple’s widget site, and today it’s the featured widget on the home page (screenshot for posterity). Sweet.

Of course, I’ll never be able to replicate that feat. Who knows why our widget got chosen? Maybe there’s a sandal-wearing environmentalist running Apple’s widget library? The odds favour it.

Speaking of environmentalism, check out this skewering of the US Senate’s absurd new ethanol legislation.
