We had a couple of no-shows at the planned post-BarCamp hockey pool, so we weren’t quite quorate. I thought I’d take one more kick at this particular can and suggest a virtual pool, run in real-time over Skype.
I was thinking next Monday, October 6 between 5:30pm and 7:30pm. I know four games will have been played by then, but I don’t think that particularly matters.
I figure Skype is probably the most ubiquitous, simplest tool in which to run the draft. If you’ve got another suggestion–I guess Twitter would be a possibility–fire away.
If you’re interested in joining said, uh, Automagical Virtual Hockey Pool, leave a comment.
If we get enough, I’ll run it. If not, I’ll watch the 2008-09 season with a stake in only one, meagre, non-playoff team. And if there’s a torrent of interest, the maximum number of participants is 15. All other rules are as on the BarCamp wiki.

This weekend is the third annual version of the now legendary Vancouver BarCamp. There will be over 300 people this time around, and we’re taking over Granville Island with three different venues. The long term forecast looks okay, but it’s too soon to tell, weather-wise.
I wanted to post a quick run-down of the BarCamp stuff that I’m involved in. Descriptions are lifted from the BarCamp topics list:
- How to Be a Laptop Bedouin or ‘Hobo 2.0′ - Julie and Darren are going to start a conversation about living where your work isn’t, and what tools and techniques you need to live in Africa and work in Yaletown.
- ShortTermOlympicVancouver2010RentalsForBigBucks.com - Todd and Darren want to lead a talk about building a short-term apartment rental site for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. The conversation will cover feasibility of the idea, requirements, business model and so forth. If participants think it’s a good idea, we’ll form an ad hoc group to build the site.
- Don’t forget the post-BarCamp hockey pool at the Backstage Lounge. We’re going to try to occupy their big back room, and there’s dinner to be had if you’re feeling peckish. We’ve got 9 or 10 participants thus far, and we’ve got space for 15. You’re welcome to join even if you’re not coming for BarCamp.

Reminded by Rebecca’s post, I wanted to post two quick notes about the forthcoming BarCamp Vancouver:
- We only have two sponsor slots left. If you’ve got $500 burning a hole in your company’s pocket, please consider sponsoring BarCamp.
- If I can get enough bodies, I’m going to run a hockey pool this season. The draft will be at The Backstage Lounge on Granville Island immediately following BarCamp, starting at 5:30pm sharp. For more details and to sign up, visit this page on the BarCamp wiki. I know there’s a reasonably small convergence of geeks and sports fans, but hopefully we can scare up 10 or 15. Non BarCampers welcome, of course.

Knowing that I’m a hockey fan, somebody asked me today which rookie he should pick in his pool. I haven’t been following the training camps and pre-season very closely (though I’ve been enjoying the FanHouse’s team-by-team previews), so I had to go do a bit of research. These five rookies seem to be likely to make their respective teams and shine in 2007-08:
- Jonathan Toews - Chicago
- Nicklas Backstrom - Washington
- Benoit Pouliot - Wild
- Peter Mueller - Coyotes
- Jack Johnson (D) - Blues
And these three seem less certain, but likely candidates as well:
- Bobby Ryan - Ducks
- Igor Grigorenko - Redwings
- Erik Johnson (D) - Kings
Like I say, I’m no expert–who are you picking?
