We Have a Title, Help Us Think of a Cover

March 5th, 2009, 9 Comments »

As regular readers know, we’ve been slaving away at a book on social media marketing for about a year now. It’s coming out in August of this year, and after much negotiation, we finally have a title. Wait for it:

Friends With Benefits:
Online Marketing with Blogs, Facebook, YouTube, and More

We went back and forth with the publisher for a long time. We even convened a brainstorming group of our peers to devise the perfect one. The publisher seemed to want something mundane, and we wanted something, perhaps, overly clever. We eventually agreed on this one, which I’m pretty happy with. It’s a little cheeky and memorable without trying too hard.

And Now, a Cover Image

We’ll have some input into what goes on the cover of the book. Do you have any great ideas? The publisher, No Starch Press, seems a little edgy in their cover designs, so that’s encouraging.

Let me put the kibosh on any “you and Julie in bed” ideas right now. That’s not on.

We can try out some cover ideas on FriendsWithBenefitsBook.com, which is currently just a ported version of SocialMediaReady.com, our ebook site. We’re going to leave it that way for a couple more months (to sell a few more ebooks), and then change the design to reflect our forthcoming book.

My (Probably Lousy) Idea Du Jour: A Site For Streamlining Interviews

February 27th, 2009, 4 Comments »

Over at Capulet, we do a fair bit of business writing. It’s mostly for our technology clients, and usually white papers, web content and so forth. We regularly do case studies, which are short documents describing how our client’s customers happily used their products or services.

This involves interviewing our client’s customers, which is harder than it sounds. The customers are busy, and random interviews with service providers are often a low priority.

I was trying to think of a way to make the process simpler, and wondered if there would be a market for a site that facilitated interviews:

  • It might offer similar functionality to When Is Good, enabling the interviewer and interviewees to agree to a time.
  • There would be some kind of form-creation service, so that interviewers could create interview templates for interviewees to complete.
  • Interviewees could type in their answers, record an audio answer using their computer’s microphone, or maybe call a number where they’re asked each question by a creepy computer voice and their answers are recorded.
  • Maybe there’s a kind of sign-off or approval process which enables interviewees to review the final interview text.

Even as I write this it seems like nail in search of a hammer, but I’m curious what you think. Is this a stupid idea, or just marginally idiotic?

Does Anybody Else Have iPhatigue?

July 2nd, 2007, 15 Comments »

iPhatigue.comI’m sure that the iPhone is, indeed, a herald of the Second Coming, the key to the Ark of the Covenant and the missing piece of the Rosetta Stone, all rolled into one. But, you know, I feel like we’ve all obsessed over it enough, and it’s time to move on. As Life Gives You Lemons points out, (via Hugh and That Canadian Girl), there’s been precious little talk of more important news.

I was lying down for a nap this morning (I got up very early), musing on the iHue and iCry. A word came to me, out of the iEther:

iPhatigue

And so that begot iPhatigue.com, yet another one-page satire. Hopefully my obscure location on a tiny island in the Mediterranean (sans Apple Store, I hasten to add) will protect me from the iCult.
