Online stuff, mostly memes or other Internet things that don't fit another category.

This guy has a peculiar kind of fetish: women in spacesuits. He's got them organized by decade. There isn't much revealing here (pun fully intended), except that spacesuit design in the movies hasn't changed much in fifty years. Actually, his fetish is more like 'women in heavy gear', as he also has pages dedicated to women in deep sea diving suits and women in scuba gear (subtle difference, there).

As you know, dear readers, I love randomness and serendipity. As such, these sentences overheard on the Tube are fantastic. Mind you, when I've taken the Tube in London, I don't hear many people talking. Mostly their being all British and grim, contemplating the immensity of their commutes.

A few of my favourites:

  • Classical dressage is really the most interesting part of horsemanship.
  • Camille Paglia. She's clever, but she knows it. She should just shut up.
  • If we ever move to Southgate, shoot me.
  • Ben Affleck doesn't even have a face.
  • I would like to kill everyone. Except you. Obviously.

I've finally succumbed to the interview meme that has been making the rounds. Devon kindly sent me these questions. If you've got a site and want to be interviewed, leave a comment.

1. You've done a lot of travelling.. so, where's your favorite place and why?
Your least favorite?

If I had to pick one, it would probably be Costa Rica. The unspoilt rain forest, the friendliness of the people and the relatively few tourists make it very appealling for me. Runners up include Prague (for the extraordinary architecture) and France, particularly Normandy and Brittany.

My least favourites are generally Mediterrenean cities. I generally enjoy the countryside, but big cities like Barcelona, Athens and Milan tend to disagree with me. They're busy, dirty, smoggy, disorderly, hot and everyone's yelling at each other.

2. How did you propose to your wife? (Sorry about this one.. I'm too much of a romantic not to ask!)

Hmmm...this is going to appeal to any romantics, I'm afraid. We're in the George and Dragon pub in Victoria, BC, drinking hot chocolate in a booth and discussing our future. There's talk of moving, of moving in, maneuvering, etc. I blurt out, entirely spontaneously, 'well, why don't we get married?' That takes us both aback for a moment.

Then we go for a walk and talk about it some more. We figured it was a good thing, and got married at the Greater Victoria Art Gallery the following winter.

3. What accomplishment are you the most proud of so far in your life?

This is a difficult question to answer. I've thought about it quite a bit, and I can't really decide. I don't think I've done anything particularly worthy yet.

4.  What's the strangest thing you've ever done?

I'm taking this as a work-related question. I've done several weird things. Here are three, off the top of my head:

a) Julie and I ran a theatre company for two years. That was strange on a number of levels.

b) I worked as an admin assitant at a rec centre, which doesn't sound weird, but involved a lot of weird tasks like making many, many buttons and fishing children out of the pool

c) For a couple of weeks one summer, my friend Rob got me a job at his father's workplace, HoneCo. They honed the inside of pipes, rendering them perfectly smooth. Rob's job, which mostly involved sitting around, was to put pipes on the honing machine and watch them get honed. My job was to watch Rob. Safety regulations required that two people be present, so all I did was sit around. Mostly we sang along to the local top-40 radio station, LG73.

5.  What's your most masculine personality trait or habit?  And your least?

My most masculine personality trait is my emotional stoicism. My least is my great affection for musicals.

Don't forget to post the rules on your site...

THE RULES:
1. Leave a comment, saying you want to be interviewed.
2. I will respond; I'll ask you five questions.
3. You'll update your Web site with my five questions, and your five answers.
4. You'll include this explanation.
5. You'll ask other people five questions when they want to be interviewed.

LiveJournal, as many of you know, is the most popular online diary service on the Web. The always inventive Steven Frank has written a script to pull random samples from Live Journal diaries and render them as a sort of newspaper. I like anything that plays with randomness, so this is right up my alley. At the moment one of the entries reads 'So I'm sitting in Charlseton right now, and I can't believe I'm engaged.'

Jim Elve brings us Blogs Canada, a directory of Canadian blogs. He's done a nice job of stealing the crappy look of Canadian government sites, right down to the name (until recently, our tax office was called Revenue Canada):

BlogsCanada is a pet project of Jelve Design, a small, 100% Canadian, family business run by a couple of Elves. Really. Check the Whois. We develop websites for small businesses and organizations. We are located in Canada and we pay Canadian taxes but we are definitely NOT the Government of Canada. We say so in the very first bit of text on every page of this site.

Jim also has an intelligent blog about Canadian politics.

Todd pointed me to the hilarious and revealing Kittenhate.com (content probably unsafe for work):

We are a free, member-oriented community website geared towards keeping track of one's sex life online and in full view of the world. Through this, you are encouraged to seek out and talk to everyday people and see what their sex lives are like. People your age or ten years younger; on the other side of the world; in your very own neighbourhood. Same sex, or opposite gender. Whatever you feel like on any particular night or day.

The URL, of course, comes from a certain myth about wanking and kittens. This guy's been particularly busy. Poor kittens.

I've just made my very own hell. In truth, I didn't give it much thought, so don't diss my levels of hell selections.

I don't actually know who Trixies or Riceboys are, but I'm going to find out. Hmmm...my 40 second Internet search produced no joy on Trixies, but I did learn what a Riceboy was. I should have known, as I grew up with a bunch of them. Mind you, we just called them 'rich Asian kids with money to burn.'

I've started writing a technology column for the Yaletown View. It's a nascent bi-weekly neighbourhood magazine that covers the usual mix of cuisine, entertainment, sex, etc. Despite the fact that Yaletown is something of a nerdistan, I'm going to keep the writing pretty lightweight and (where possible) humourous. I've written for the Web for so long, it's a little strange to have permanent deadlines and to see your work on the deadtree stuff.

My first column is on finding wireless access. The issue it's in comes out tomorrow, but you can get a preview here. Let me know if you've got any requests or ideas for columns.
