Last week I've started playing the MMPORG Star Wars Galaxies. This is the first MMPORG (massively multi-player online role-playing game) I've ever played. I've declined up til now because I wasn't a big swords-and-sorcery fan and, more importantly, didn't want to become addicted. Plus, for the past two years, I've had an Irish (and therefore lousy) Internet connection.

I've come to a realization. For me, MMPORG's are less addictive than the average game. The average game has regular achievable objectives and goals, and rewards for those goals. The stories are typically linear and there's always an 'end' to the game. MMPORGS (much like, say, Dungeons and Dragons) are extremely open-ended. You can advance at your own pace and there is no 'end.' Hence, the draw of the game isn't nearly as compelling for someone with a short attention span like mine.

The other interesting thing is that, because of the nature of the game, I can multi-task while playing it. There are some tasks--running long distances, gathering resources, etc--which take time in the game. So, I just Alt-Tab out of the game, do something else, and check back occasionally to ensure that I haven't been eaten by a womp rat (yes, I'm that lame at the moment). In fact, as I write this, my avatar is hauling ass over the plains of Correllia.
