Cinefile detritus and movie reviews

July 12, 2003

It's like the Goth Super Friends. That's about all I've got to say. Except to quote my friend Todd who asked, 'Where'd they get that Connery bot?'

Here are a whole bunch of negative reviews.

Since returning to Canada, I rarely watch TV. Why? Because we've got 76 channels. This is too many to effectively channel-surf. And, to be honest, I can even be arsed to figure out which twenty channels are more compelling and program those into my favourite channel feature on the remote. I'm crippled by choice.

But late last night I turned on the TV and surfed through all the channels. These include:

  • At least three french channels
  • Three fuzzy Chinese channels, which seem to constantly have people singing
  • The channel that links to the external cameras on my apartment building

So that's five right there. But that's not my point. My point is that the seminal character actor Timothy Spall was on three different channels last night! There was Rock Star, Lucky Break and, though I haven't seen it, Outside Edge (everyone was playing cricket, so I sense I'm right). Those are all pretty mediocre films, but he's a fantastic actor. I recently saw him in All or Nothing and his work was extraordinarily natural. Looking at his filmography, I see he's done fifty films in the last twenty years. I love those hard-working character actors, those Alan Rickmans and Tim Blake Nelsons.

Here, incidentally, is Mr. Spall receiving a much-deserved Order of the British Empire.
