Google Music: Because Maps, Web Stats and Email Aren’t Enough

Google’s march toward total information domination continues today with the launch of Google Music.

Google Music will allow a user to type in the name of a band, artist, album or song in the main Google search bar special, and results will appear at the top, accompanied by icons of music notes, said Marissa Mayer, vice president of search products and user experience at Google.

Here, for example, are the search results for Franz Ferdinand.

I’m still waiting for the day when someone invents a search engine for melodies — the musical equivalent of the ability to search for any phrase in the Google Book Search.

Have a nagging melody stuck in your head, but no idea what song it’s fron or who wrote it? Transcribe the melody into the search engine (or, heck, even sing it into a .wav file recording — this is the 21st century, right?), and within a matter of seconds, the Google information empire will come up with not only the information you need, but the resulting links to where the song can be acquired or purchased, satisfying that melodic craving for good.

The last frontier in online searches, as far as I’m concerned. All the rest is gravy.
